In 2023, Albania designated the entire river basin as Vjosa Wild River National Park, protecting 13,000 hectares of braided channels, cobble islands, and riparian forest that shift with every spring flood. The decision ended decades of hydropower proposals and cemented the Vjosa's status as a living laboratory for fluvial geomorphology, a place where sediment transport, channel migration, and ecological succession proceed without human interference.
